Chat
Session Rules
1) Please make sure you can
login to theweb page
for chat
session, when you get the account information, so that you need not try it out,
just before the chat is scheduled, and you cannot make it.
2) Check out the chat
attendance, the very next day, so that in the end of the semester, you don't say
that you attended all the sessions, but you don't see your attendance up there.
3) Sarcastic comments (in
person or via email) are not appropriate and will NEVER be tolerated.
4)In particular, asking about
individual grades, or "did you get my email," or "have you looked
at my web site" are things that can be handled one-on-one via email or
telephone. Chat sessions are meant to stick to general interest stuff
(interesting to ALL or most students). If you have any of such questions, double
click on the name of the GA, and you will find a new window, where you can ask
such questions, so that the normal flow of the chat is not disturbed.
Requirements:
Attendance and active
participation in fifteen (15) chat
sessions per semester per course. All students registered for the course (on
campus or distance learning) must satisfy this requirement, no exceptions.
Failure to satisfy the Chat Session requirement will result in failure for the
course.
Objectives:
To facilitate a meaningful interaction with
the instructor, graduate assistant and other students in the course. To provide
an opportunity to ask/answer questions about the course content. To help build a
learning community.
Grading Weight:
At least 5% of course grade, but may vary by
course and/or instructor.
How to satisfy this requirement:
1. Attend one or both of the twice weekly chat sessions scheduled by the
graduate assistant (credit for attendance at one session each time you spend at
least 30 minutes of active participation in a session). Only one credit possible
per session.
2. Lead/moderate one of the twice weekly chat sessions scheduled by the graduate
assistant (credit for attendance at two chat sessions). Must be arranged in
advance with the graduate assistant, announced to the class, and cover a
specific topic related to the course.
3. Attend a self-scheduled chat session which includes at least two other
students currently enrolled in the course (credit for attendance at one chat
session). The session must last at least 30 minutes, cover topics related to the
course content, and a complete transcript provided to the graduate assistant by
the Sunday of the week in which the session took place. Graduate assistant will
verify such sessions using the system logs.
4. Make a formal presentation to a session of the on-campus section of the
course (if one is available). Must be arranged in advance with the
instructor (credit for attendance at two chat sessions).
5. Each two week period of the course must include credit for chat session
attendance (via one of the four ways mentioned above).
6. At the discretion of the instructor, extra credit may be given for chat
session attendance in excess of the 15 session requirement.
Note: Transcripts of all chat sessions will be posted on the course web site.
